What Shabbos at the Bunker looks like

Every week, teens and young adults fill the Shidler family's home on Bunker Hill Drive for Shabbos and Yom Tov meals. Some nights are structured — a guest speaker, singing, a farbrengen that goes late. Some nights are just sitting around the table talking. All nights are about belonging.

There's no cost, no sign-up sheet, and no dress code beyond basic respect. Separate boys' and girls' programs keep the environment comfortable, and the four house doodles usually find whoever needs them most.

Why a Shabbos table, of all things

For a teen who feels pushed out of Jewish life, the front door back in is rarely a lecture — it's a meal where nobody grades you. Shabbos hospitality is how the Bunker of Light meets people: no pressure, no judgment, just food, warmth, and people who are happy you came. Torah and learning are always available for whoever wants them, and never forced on whoever doesn't.

Regulars come from Toms River, Lakewood, Jackson, Howell, Brick, and Manchester.
