Emergency Temporary Housing for Jewish Youth

Why a few nights matter

Some of the young people who reach the Bunker of Light would otherwise sleep in a car, on a bench, or on whichever couch said yes that night. Emergency temporary housing means that when it's appropriate, there's a real bed in a real family home in Toms River — with a hot meal, adults who care, and no lecture at the door.

The stay is short by design: a few nights or days, enough to get steady, make a plan, and connect with the right longer-term help. Nearly every week our beds are spoken for, all by word of mouth.

What this is — and what it isn't

This is a structured family home, not a licensed shelter, group home, or residential facility. There are clear house rules, separate boys' and girls' programs, parental approval for anyone under 18, and ongoing guidance from rabbanim and care professionals. Stays are offered when appropriate, at the family's discretion, and we're honest when a situation needs something we're not.

For longer-term housing, licensed shelter services, or clinical care, we help make warm referrals to the right agencies and providers — and we stay in the picture while the handoff happens.

What a stay comes with

A guest here isn't a case number. During a stay there are meals, mentoring, help with jobs or school, mental-health support and advocacy when it's needed, and the same doodles and Shabbos table as everyone else. Most guests stay connected long after the emergency passes — which is the point.
